Design of a terracotta prototype that reduces urban heat island effect and the carbon footprints of buildings.
This prototype, developed for the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW) with Boston Valley Terra Cotta in Buffalo, New York, innovatively uses terracotta and glaze to passively cool facades. The design manipulates an extruded terracotta façade fin, 'the twist,' to enhance shading potential, while the experimental glaze aims to maximize solar reflectance and improve air quality through the photocatalytic property of titanium dioxide.
I developed a white paper as a collaboration with UNS and WPM on the application of terracotta for vertical shading and presented it at the Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG) Conference, held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Here I showcased the research and prototyping conducted at the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop in Buffalo. Building on the facade system developed for Wasl Tower in Dubai, this project explores innovative ways to advance ceramic facade systems to:
- Reduce solar heat gain
- Mitigate the urban heat island effect
- Lower embodied and operational carbon
